Some songs hit a nerve you didn’t know was exposed — and Torn Between Two Lovers by Mary MacGregor is one of those songs for me.

It tells the story of someone who’s fallen in love with two people at once. She knows it’s wrong. She’s not proud of it. But it’s happening. She confesses to one partner that she can’t give him up — yet she can’t let go of the other, either. The emotional honesty of that line — “loving both of you is breaking all the rules” — stays with me every time I hear it.

This isn’t a love triangle like in the movies. It’s not romantic. It’s painful. It’s messy. And for many, it’s real.

I’ve never been in that situation myself, and honestly, I don’t think I could handle it. If I loved someone, I wouldn’t be able to love another — not in the same way. But not everyone is built the same, and life has a way of testing the rules we thought we’d never break.

So it made me wonder:

  • What would someone expect as an outcome from a situation like this?
  • Is honesty enough, or does someone always end up hurt?
  • Can you truly love two people equally — or is that just something we tell ourselves?

I don’t have the answers. But I’d like to hear what you think.

Have you ever known someone who was torn between two lovers?
What would you do if you found yourself in that position — or on the receiving end of it?

Let’s talk about it.
Drop a comment, share your story (anonymously if you like), or just let the music say what you can’t.

Because love isn’t always simple — but talking about it can bring some clarity.

Interestingly, Mary MacGregor later admitted she didn’t even like the song. She felt little sympathy for the narrator — and in a twist of fate, the success of Torn Between Two Lovers indirectly led to the end of her own marriage. The demands of her career and constant travel pulled her away from home, straining her relationship until it broke. It’s almost as if the song she sang became a shadow of her own life.
