Until We Meet Again
“Mila, I have some bad news,” I said, my voice barely steady.
Her eyes widened, her gaze fixed on mine, fear and worry mixed in her expression.
“What is it?” she asked, her voice already trembling.
I took a deep breath. “I got a letter from the government,” I replied quietly. “I have to report to the army next Monday.”
Her expression changed from shock to understanding. “You’re joking, right?” she whispered, almost hoping I’d laugh and say it was a mistake.
I felt her body tense as she leaned in closer, her heart pounding against my chest.
“Eighteen months feels like forever,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Who’s going to walk me home now?”
I tried to sound strong, but I couldn’t hide the sadness in my voice. “I know,” I said softly. “I’ll miss you too, more than you know. But I have no choice. I have to go… it’s either that or jail.”
She let out a deep sigh, her shoulders dropping. “I will wait for you, Alex,” she said, her voice stronger than before.
I forced a smile, trying to lighten the mood. “Eighteen months is a long time,” I said with a playful grin. “What if you forget me?”
Mila squeezed my hand, her expression softening. “Forget you?” she replied, her voice gentle but firm. “Love like ours doesn’t just fade away. I’ll be here when you come back, just as I am now.”
